Air Plants - What's Hot and Trendy
Posted by Enchanted Florist on 12th Jun 2013
Air plants are a hot trending item right now in home decor. Some of you may remember these cute little plants from the 70's. So I guess they are old to some as well. Of course trends cycle, and their time has come again. And there’s so much you can do with them.
Want a way to bring in a little green into you kitchen, how about an air plant attached to a magnet, or hung from a string in front of a window. What about the bathroom? How about a few plants on there? Air plants are a versatile addition and can be added to anything.
About Air Plants
Air plants, the common name for Tillandsias, are a hardy plant that can be a little intimidating to the beginner, especially when you realize they’re not planted in anything. They like bright light, but indirect is best. If they get to hot they can get fried. The optimum environment for them is a humid one, but this can be achieved through misting. In a warmer environment, more misting will be necessary. Also, once to twice a month your little plants would like a bath. Soak them for 1-2 hours, then make sure they are dry before returning them to their home.
Where to Put Your Air Plants
We now sell air plants at Enchanted Florist. You can buy them individually, or in a pre-made arrangement. One popular way to display the mini air plants is in a small clear globe.
These are cute, and can be hung in various locations. Just be careful not to put in direct sun light. Want something a little more substantial. You can fill a vase with colored rocks or gravel to match any decor, then just place the plants in your container. Be aware that air plants CAN NOT go into terrariums that have lids. While they like humidity, air plants need to be able to dry out between watering’s. I have the one below in our small pillow vase. This vase is wide to show off the plants, but thin so it could fit on a desk or small table.

More Natural Air Plants
These air plants give off a tropical vibe to me. So I like them best when they look more natural. Air plants mounted on grapewood have been around awhile, but are gaining popularity once again. The process is very simple. All you need is a piece of cleaned wood. No you can not just go pick up a log off the beach. It needs to be bug and fungus free. Then using E6000 glue, figure out where you want them to go and glue them on. Sometimes large plants will need to be tied on using fishing wire.

After making a couple of these to sell in the flower shop, I started to play around. I still can’t decide if I like it or not. I added a little color to the air plant and grape wood log. I guess there’s something for everyone. Let me know what some of you think.
