August Flower Spotlight: The Gladiola
Posted by Enchanted Florist on 10th Aug 2015
“The earth laughs in flowers” (Ralph Waldo Emerson)
The symbol of strength and integrity, the gladiola is a member of the iris family, and grows abundantly in mid-summer. Gladiola bulbs (also known as corms) produce gorgeous spikes of flowers that often grow up to four feet.
The name gladiola means sword, from the Latin “gladius” and refers to the shape of the leaf. Native to South Africa, today there are more than 10,000 varieties available. Once used as a cure for colic, gladiolas are among the most popular flowers, both in garden beds and bouquets.
These graceful stems, known in the flower industry as “line flowers” showcase beautifully in tall cylindrical vases or containers. We recommend that the height of the vessel you choose be approximately one-third the length of the stems. Because they tend to open only on one side of the stem, take care as you arrange them so that the blooms are visible from all sides. Try to stagger the height of the flowers as you arrange them, keeping the tallest stems in the middle.
For the most impressive visual impact, use a single color blossom, and add a few curly willow branches.
When creating a centerpiece for a dining table try removing the blossoms from the stem and placing them in a shallow bowl of water, like a floating garden.
Less is more when deciding how much water to use in the vase. Too much will increase the amount of bacteria growth, six inches or so should do the trick.
A vibrant bouquet of these gorgeous stems makes a wonderful present for that special someone with an August birthday, or the perfect hostess gift. Remember, you really do not need a specific reason to buy flowers for someone; “just because” is always in good taste. Contact us for all of your floral needs, we are always glad to help.
