January Flower Spotlight: Stargazers' Inspiration
Posted by Enchanted Florist Pasadena on 11th Jan 2016
If you are a dreamer and lover of flowers, the Stargazer Lily is sure to appeal to you. A recent addition to the lily family, Stargazers were previously confused with “Rubrum” lilies, whose flowers faced the earth, not the sky, and looked rather dead and uninspiring. In 1974 (some say 1978), after much hard work in his quest for the “perfect lily”, California lily grower and breeder Leslie Woodruff came up with the Stargazer lily, a hybrid Oriental/Asiatic lily, which faced upward towards the stars, inspiring dreamers and lovers and ending all confusion with the Rubrum lily.
The quick- growing, rather tall (up to 36”) and very fragrant Stargazer loves the sun, and does best in full sunlight (like some of its admirers!). It can be planted in the fall or the spring, depending upon which season the bulbs are purchased. Planting soon after receiving them is best, as the bulbs are sensitive, and storing them might only serve to drain their essence. They are joyful additions to any garden and can be used in bouquets for all occasions, adding color, scent and a feeling of hope.
As far back as ancient Greece, lilies have been associated with pure hearts and innocent souls, and the relatively new Stargazers, as well as other beloved lilies, are now traditionally used to convey all manner of well wishing, from congratulations to apology and sympathy. Stargazers appear to us in a few colors, ranging from pure white (often used for expressions of sympathy, or as an apology) to shades of dark pink (often associated with “wealth and prosperity”, hence signifying ‘congratulations’). Today the Stargazer has also come to be associated with “honor and aspiration” (from “Flower Meanings- the Meaning of Different Flowers”; ProFlowers, Nov. 2012).
Stargazer lilies are the flowers of the month of May, and as such are popular as birthday bouquets, especially, of course, in May. They have also been traditionally used as wedding flowers, carried by brides and given as anniversary gifts; they traditionally represent the 30th wedding anniversary, but popularity has spread to include weddings in every month, and even the February holiday for lovers. Valentine’s Day is another occasion when Stargazers appear in all their glory, as symbols of love, joy, and the unlimited possibility of reaching the stars.
