Native to southern Africa, calla lilies are strong, beautiful, and a popular cut flower that can survive extended hours after removal from the plant. It is generally grown from a bulb or rhizome. You may also hear it referred to as arum lily, trumpet lily, pig lily, or miniature calla lily.
Technically, the calla lily is neither a calla nor a lily. It is part of the zantedeschia genus (which make excellent houseplants) named for the Italian botanist Giovanni Zantedeschi.
Calla lilies get their name from the Greek word, “kalos”, meaning beauty. The language of flower gifting means that certain flowers “speak” certain sentiments without the need for explanation.
The white calla lily came to represent the youth and rebirth of Spring in the Victorian era. It also represents divinity and resurrection. White calla lilies are often used in weddings to represent purity, innocence, devotion, and marital bliss. Dark purple or deep blue variations appearing black, represent sympathy.
Other calla lily colors include shades of green, and lavender, representing feminine beauty, refinement, grace, and elegance; orange, indicating satisfaction, passion for life, confidence, energy, enthusiasm, and success; pink, signifying admiration, love, and romance; purple, expressing passion, royalty, and accomplishment; red, highlighting intensity, courage, and heat; and finally yellow, showing friendship, joy, and lightheartedness.
Fully grown calla lilies bloom to about 5 inches in diameter with a height between 1 and 3 feet. Their grass colored leaves resemble arrowheads and grow to a length of about 1 1/2 feet long. The leaves may have white or silver flecks.
Calla lilies thrive in their tropical climate with a steady temperature, rainy seasons and dry seasons. In their natural habitat with sufficient water, energy, and nutrition, they will bloom all year round, even under dark skies. Migrated, they may even survive frost.
Calla lilies have been grown at the Royal Garden in Paris since 1664. Thereafter, they became widely used at weddings and practically any European festivity.
