Say 'Thank You' to a Nurse This Week

National Nurses Day is May 6th and National Nurses Week is May 6th through the 12th. If your life has been touched (or even saved!) by a nurse, say 'thank you' with a handwritten card and a bouquet of flowers or a blooming plant.
International Nurses Day was started in 1974 by the International Council of Nurses to recognize English nurse Florence Nightingale for her efforts in creating the nursing profession we know today. They chose May 12th because it was this pioneering woman's birthday.
The 'Lady with the Lamp' believed that it was a nurse's duty to take care of her patients, no matter how late the hour or dangerous the situation. She instilled a sense of purpose, nobility, and professionalism in her students that transformed medical care.
A National Nurses Day to honor American nurses was first proposed in 1953, but it wasn't until President Reagan signed it into law in 1982 that it became official. That single day was later extended to an entire week ending on May 12th in order to incorporate International Nurses Day. Additionally, future nurses are given special recognition during National Student Nurse Day on May 8.
One benefit of extending the national recognition to a week is that it gives people more time to recognize these dedicated and hard-working professionals. Two popular ways communities honor nurses and their chosen profession during this week is by organizing health fairs and blood drives.
As Donna Wilk Cardillo once said: "Nursing is not for everyone. It takes a very strong, intelligent, and compassionate person to take on the ills of the world with passion and purpose and work to maintain the health and well-being of the planet. No wonder we’re exhausted at the end of the day!"
We might feel an extra 'dose' of gratitude to our favorite nurse on May 12th, but we truly appreciate their hard work, dedication, and compassionate care throughout the year. Next time a nurse is taking your blood pressure or charting your vitals, why not tell her so? A sincere 'thank you' goes far towards making a difficult day easier. Contact Enchanted Florist for an even more substantial way of showing your gratitude.
