October Flower Spotlight: The Antherium

Brightly colored, heart-shaped flowers and waxy, beautifully colored ornamental leaves are the features that distinguish Antheriums. Typically vibrant red and orange, the long-lasting blooms of the Antherium make it a globally desired cut flower. Other colors include pink, purple, green, white and even brown.
So spectacular are Antherium flowers, that only one single stem is required in an arrangement, to make it breath-taking and unusual. Lone antherium blooms can also stand on their own, along with a bit of foliage to create a simple and harmonious arrangement. Japanese-style arrangements with smooth stones and simple vases provide a special elegance, even for everyday use!
Also known as Flamingo Lily, Boy Flower, Painter's Pallette, Painted Tongue and Tail Flower, the Antherium is tropical in nature, and thrives best in a climate of low light and high humidity. According to Wikipedia, Antheriums occur in tropical environments from Mexico to Hawaii, and some parts of the Carribbean, where approximately 800 species of this irresistible flower can be found. The National Museum of Science indicates that most cut Antherium flowers are imported from Taiwan, the Netherlands and Hawaii. Since there is no distinct flowering season for Antheriums, they are available for any occasion, year-round.
The bloom, which appears to always be wide open, is the reason Antheriums are a symbol of hospitality. As such, arrangements composed with Antheriums are appropriate for any hosted occasion. They fit effortlessly into any decor style and need little attention to maintain their beauty for a month or more, although they prefer temperatures above 70 degrees Farenheit. Antherium can last up to six weeks after cutting, although this is dependent upon the plant variety and conditions in which it is kept.
