Want More Succulents? Here Is How To Propagate
Posted by Enchanted Florist on 19th Oct 2015
Succulents are wonderful plants. They are beautiful and survive on little water. These plants go easy on new and super busy gardeners. So naturally, you want more succulents. How do you get more from the plants from the succulents you have? Fortunately, we know how to propagate succulents.
- Your first step is to take a leaf off your succulent plant. It is best to take a razor or craft knife to cut off a couple of leaves cleanly. Sterilize the razor with white spirit or something similar before you cut off the leaves. Which leaves should you pick? Unblemished and unripped healthy leaves. Also, remember to take off a good number of leaves, as you will lose some leaves in the process. You can, if you are really careful, use your fingers. Just very gently twist back and forth to make sure you get the whole leaf.
- Lay the leaves out flat on something hard and let them dry for 1 to 3 days. Make sure the mother plant is in the sun so it can seal up the places where the leaves were. If the leaves start to wrinkle, leave them alone. Wrinkling is normal and good.
- Prepare some soil. You need soil that drains well. Well-rotted compost and fine pumice, mixed equally, makes a good soil. There are soils that you can buy that are designed for succulents, but pretty much anything that drains well will do.
- You can dip the leaves in rooting hormone powder to discourage fungus and encourage growth, but it isn't necessary.
- Lay your leaves flat on your soil. You can put them in a pattern if you want. Sprinkle water on the leaves if the soil is dry. Succulents only need water once every other week, but the leaves need a misting whenever the soil gets dry. Keep your leaves in the sun, and make sure the water can drain away.
- Within a month, the leaves will sprout roots that will find the soil. The leaves will grow new leaves, and you will get new succulents. You can scale back your watering.
As you can see, succulents are very easy to propagate. You can make yourself a nice garden in a season without much work. Of course, you need the first succulent to start them from. When you want that first plant, contact us. We have a great variety to choose from.
